Instruções para Autores

All submissions should be made online. The manuscript file must be anonymized and proof-read before submission. Manuscripts must not be under consideration for publication elsewhere or have appeared in any other published form at the time of submission. For anonymity in the reviewing process, the author’s name, affiliations, and contact information should be excluded from the manuscript (please see «Ensuring a blind review»)

Languages: English, Portuguese and Spanish

Manuscript length: The manuscript should not exceed 7 000 words (or about 40 000 characters without spaces) excluding abstract and references.

Abstract, keywords and author biography
When submitting the manuscript, please include a concise and informative abstract of between 150 and 200 words, three to six keywords and an author biography of no more than 50 words per author. The title, abstract and keywords must be submitted in the language of the manuscript and always in English even if the manuscript is written in Spanish or Portuguese. The author bio(s) should be written in the same language as the manuscript.

The abstract should state briefly the purpose of the research, the methodology applied, the principal results and major conclusions. Do not use subheadings in the abstract. 

The author biography should include the author's full name and title, institutional affiliation and main research interests. The author's e-mail address should also be provided.

If relevant, the author should include a statement of whether (financial and non-financial) conflicting interests exist.

Evaluation criteria
Reviewers write an evaluation of the manuscript, focusing on the following points (review guidelines):

  1. Relevance: Does the manuscript address central issues within the relevant field of research?
  2. Contextualization: Is the background description adequate?

  4. Validity: How reliable and valid are the results? Does the author make use of suitable theories and sound methodological choices?
  5. Argumentation: Does the text present a clear scientific argument?
  6. Is ethical clearance shown and have ethical guidelines been followed?
  7. Structure and clarity: Is the article well written and appropriately structured?
  8. Tables and figures: Are tables and figures easy to read and do the captions give sufficient information?
  9. References: Do the references follow the APA format?

Style guide

  • Page format: A4; margins: 2.5 cm all around; line spacing: 1.5
  • Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 pt
  • Notes: footnotes should be used sparingly. Do not use endnotes.
  • Quotes: short quotations within the text should be marked by double quotation marks. Longer quotations exceeding three lines should be placed within the document as an indented paragraph, with extra line breaks before and after the quote.
  • Highlighting: Use italics to highlight information within text. Do not use any other form of highlighting, except for clickable URL links, which will automatically be underlined
  • Articles should be structured using short, meaningful subheadings. Please use only two levels of headings as far as possible.
  • Tables and figures: For table and figure captions as well as for text within tables and figures, the author should use the Arial font, size 10pt. Figures should have a minimum resolution of 300 dpi.
  • The manuscript file should be as complete as possible. This means that the images, figures, tables, footnotes and bibliography will preferably be placed within the manuscript file the way the author wishes them to appear in the final published article.
  • Literature references: IARTEM e-journal uses the reference style as described in the APA Publication Manual (6th edition). Authors must make sure that the literature citations and the bibliography are formatted to the specifications given in these guidelines.
  • References in the text: Literature references within the main text should be placed in parentheses (Author, 2000, p. 10). Footnotes or endnotes should not be used for literature references.
  • Bibliography: References should be listed first alphabetically and then chronologically. The section should include all (and only) references that are actually mentioned in the text. DOIs should be included whenever possible.

Expert voices (Invited commentary)

Although focused on research into textbooks and educational media, the IARTEM e-journal is also eager to pay attention to the diverse actors and currents in the domain of educational media. The journal is therefore interested not only in contributions directly based on research, but also in problematised narratives of practice and views of ongoing changes in the field. The editorial committee of the e-journal has therefore decided to open a new section called “expert voices”.

Contributions should be authored by a recognised expert in the field of research or practice. They are expected to be relatively short (between 2 000 and 2 500 words) and to address practice and perspectives. All contributions will be submitted to examination by the editorial committee and an external reviewer. No abstract is required and there should be a limited number of citations and references.

Attribution: You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use. 

ShareAlike: If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original. 

No additional restrictions: You may not apply legal terms or technological measures that legally restrict others from doing anything the license permits. 

Notice: No warranties are given. The license may not give you all of the permissions necessary for your intended use. For example, other rights such as publicity, privacy, or moral rights may limit how you use the material. 

Authors who publish in IARTEM e-journal accept the following conditions: 

Author(s) retains copyright to the article and give IARTEM e-journal rights to first publication while the article is licensed under the Creative Commons CC BY-SA 4.0. This license allows sharing the article for non-commercial purposes, as long as the author and first publishing place IARTEM e-journal are credited. 

The author is free to publish and distribute the work/article after publication in IARTEM e-journal, as long as the journal is referred to as the first place of publication. Submissions that are under consideration for publication or accepted for publication in IARTEM e-journal cannot simultaneously be under consideration for publication in other journals, anthologies, monographs or the like. By submitting contributions, the author accepts that the contribution is published online in IARTEM e-journal.
